Today, we are going to take a closer look at the history-making Solar Impulse, a record-breaking solar airplane.
Solar Flight
Solar Impulse arose from the vision of two men, André Borschberg and Bertrand Piccard. They envisioned a future where air travel could be achieved without the use of jet fuel, planes relying solely on renewable energies and clean technologies. Many detractors said that a zero-fuel plane was an impossible concept, that any design would be too large and too light to control effectively. In 2009, Piccard and Borschberg proved the naysayers wrong. The Solar Impulse solar plane conducted its first test flight in December of that year, and in July of 2010, it flew an entire diurnal solar cycle which included nearly 9 hours of nighttime flight. In 2016, the duo completed the first ever circumnavigation of the globe without the use of fuel in the Solar Impulse 2. They flew nearly 40,000 kilometers in an effort to promote the use and development of clean and renewable energies, proving that solar energy has what it takes to stand up to technical, human, and operational challenges in ways that no one had previously thought possible.
